Chapter Eleven
Savaric tamped down his frustration at the small maddening woman in front of him. âWell? Care to explain?â
âExplain?â She looked up at him innocently. âI am not certain I comprehend you.â
âAllow me then, Marguerite,â he ground out between clenched teeth. âYou nearly got yourself captured at best in those woods, or killed at worst!â
She waved her hand dismissively. âI think not. And thanks to you, I managed to avoid such a fate.â
His nostrils flared at her flippant remark. âAnd what if I had not reached you in time? What if whoever that man was got to you first? Have you considered what your fate might have been then?â
âI believe you are familiar with the skills I possess with a dagger.â
She lifted her head in that proud, defiant manner, challenging him to refute the statement when all he wanted to do was cover her mouth with his to stop her from chattering this nonsense. Did she not understand how scared he had been for her safety? Did she not appreciate that it could have ended in disaster, as it once nearly had? He shuddered, looking down at the woman and in particular those swollen lips of hers. Damn but he should not have kissed Marguerite.
âWell, are you not?â she murmured.
Savaric had realised that he had to get Marguerite away from Anais de Montluc and her accomplice or else be discovered. So he had carried the aggravating woman, running as fast as he could in woods that he was very familiar with and forming a scheme, which he devised the moment they reached the gatehouse into the city.
Yet he should have refrained from kissing Marguerite. That had not been part of his plan. How many times did he need to make the same mistake over and over again? The woman had him tied in knots, his head reeling.
âI am, yes. But that is not the point, as you well know, Marguerite.â
âYou are making far too much of it, Savaric.â
âI assure you I am not.â He dragged his fingers through his hair irritably. âWhat in the world possessed you to throw caution to the wind and follow that woman on your own? It could have led you to an unforeseen situation and put you in unnecessary danger. In truth, it very nearly did.â
âJust as you did, if I remember correctly, when you found yourself in an alley by the docks. Or have you conveniently forgotten that?â
âThat was entirely different.â He glared at her.
âOf course, it was.â
âIndeed. And after getting over the shock of seeing you there that night, I decided to turn back and get you.â
âHow considerate of you. But as you later found out, quite an unnecessary act. I can look after myself, Savaric. I have been doing so for the past two years.â
âThat might be so,â he muttered through gritted teeth. âBut you were not doing so tonight. I spotted you in the distance and decided to follow you. Not only had you not noticed me coming upon you but you stood motionless, as if you had turned to ice.
